No. 4 North Dakota closed a perfect exhibition weekend at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Sunday afternoon, beating the University of Manitoba 5-1 after outshooting the Bisons 24-0 in the first period, per UND Athletics.
How It Went
UND Athletics reported the Fighting Hawks put 56 shots on goal in the win. Anthony Menghini scored twice and Keaton Verhoeff and Carson Carels each added a goal and an assist. Connor Davis and Hudson Malinoski each had two assists, giving UND five players with multiple points.
Menghini opened the scoring at 11:06 of the first period, and Jack Kernan made it 2-0 1:51 later, according to UND Athletics. Manitoba's Grady Lane cut the lead to 2-1 on the power play at 2:45 of the second period.
The Grand Forks Herald focused on Menghini, who it reported won the team's annual preseason fitness testing competition and was voted an assistant captain by his teammates. The Herald also reported that UND sat several regulars Sunday, including forward Will Zellers, forward Mac Swanson and defenseman E.J. Emery.
The Weekend in Full
On Saturday, UND beat Augustana 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 11,658, UND Athletics reported. The Hawks scored three times on five power-play chances that night. Sophomore goalie Jan Spunar played all 60 minutes on Saturday, per UND Athletics.
Exhibition results do not count in the standings. The ranking is UND's: the program lists the team at No. 4 heading into the season.
