University of North Dakota Athletics announced Monday, Nov. 2, that Tom Scott was named Summit League Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. The announcement said Scott led UND to its second straight conference championship in St. Paul, Minnesota, last Saturday.
UND scored 22 points, one shy of the meet record for the lowest team score, and all five scoring runners earned First Team All-Summit League honors, according to the announcement. Shewaye Johnson won the 6-kilometer race in 20:30.0, the second-fastest winning time in championship history, the athletics department said. The announcement also said six UND runners earned all-league honors, the most in program history.
The announcement said the team finished fourth among 29 teams at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri, and received votes in the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll for the first time since the program moved to NCAA Division I. At that meet, Olivia Correale ran 19:55.3 in the 6K, becoming the second Summit League woman to break 20 minutes, according to UND Athletics.
UND’s women placed 17th at the Under Armour Pre National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, and swept the top seven places at the Dragon Twilight in Moorhead, the announcement said. Nine of 12 returning UND runners set personal bests in the 6K during the season, according to the department.
Scott also finished second in voting for Summit League Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. UND’s men placed second at the conference championship with 45 points, and all five scoring runners earned All-Summit League honors, the announcement said.
