No. 4 North Dakota beat Manitoba 5-1 on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, closing its exhibition weekend undefeated, according to University of North Dakota Athletics.
The announcement said Anthony Menghini scored twice, while North Dakota outshot Manitoba 56-9. Jack Kernan, Carson Carels and Keaton Verhoeff also scored for the Fighting Hawks, according to the university.
Manitoba scored its only goal on a power play early in the second period, the announcement said. North Dakota led 2-0 after the first period, then added one goal in the second and two in the third.
Freshman goaltender Caleb Heil made seven saves during 57 minutes in his first unofficial collegiate start, and Alex Scheiwiller stopped the only shot he faced in the final 2:54, according to the university. North Dakota went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Manitoba went 1-for-2.
North Dakota is scheduled to open its regular season Friday, Oct. 9, against Bemidji State at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minnesota, with puck drop at 7:07 p.m., the announcement said. The game is listed for CCHA.tv via Midco Sports Plus and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
